Details

Make this adorable hat, using less than one skein of Kaleidoscope Worsted yarn from Euro Baby, which leaves you with yarn left over for matching accessories!

This hat features the new Knit Picks short point Caspian interchangeable needle set which allows you to use 16” cords for sizes 4 – 10.

Materials:

Size 9 16” circular needle
1 stitch marker to mark beginning of round
1 yarn needle
1 skein Kaleidoscope Worsted yarn – color shown #102 in greens and yellows.  Actual yardage is approximately 65 yards.  This skein is 442 yards so you have enough yarn for matching items such as a blanket or sweater for your special baby!

Sizes:

Newborn to 6 months (12”), 12 months (14”),  2 years (16”), 3 years (18”) and up

Gauge:

16 stitches = 4 inches

Abbreviations:

M1: Pick up the bar between the next 2 stitches and knit to the back.  This creates a new snug stitch without a hole.
K2tog: Knit 2 stitches together as if you are knitting 1 stitch (decreases 1 stitch).
Kfb: Knit the stitch in the front and then in the back (increases 1 knit stitch).
P2tog: Purl 2 stitches together as if you are purling 1 stitch (decreases 1 stitch).

Circular Method:

If you find the circumference too tight for one set of needles, you have several options.  You can add a longer cord (24” or 32”) to your needle tips and have more room to knit when you scrunch your needle in half as explained below.  The second option is to add a second set of Size 9 circular needles to knit around.  The third option is to switch to double pointed needles.  My original hat was knitted with one set of Short Caspian needles with their 16” cord.

Pattern:

Cast on 48 (56, 64, 72) stitches, place marker, and join to begin knitting in the round.  Be careful not to twist the stitches.  This will be a slight stretch on your needle.  In order to not stretch the yarn, squish and pull your cord through at about ½ the stitches.  This should give you room to attach in the round if needed as on the smallest hat and continue around.

These two pieces should naturally twist or twist it yourself so it curls on itself.   Take the thread at the beginning and thread it down with a crochet hook through the piece to the bottom opposite the other thread at the bottom.  This will make it curl a bit more and give you 2 tie down threads to the top center of the hat.  Tie both ears to the center top and there you have your ears!

Weave in beginning hat thread to smooth brim and enjoy!
